The tropical water is shallow, clear, warm, and filled with tropical fish and coral.  The coral reef is easily accessible and there is a variety of Key Largo Snorkeling Tours. The average depth on the reefs is 15-25 feet which is great for families and beginners. Water temperatures are above 80 degrees most of the water therefore wetsuits are not required.

November through March it is likely that water temperatures will range 74-78 degrees and wetsuits may be needed.  The water will be warmest during June, July, and August with temperatures averaging 86-90+ degrees. Snorkeling in the morning and the afternoon is very similar and only impacted by the weather for that particular day.

  2. Molasses Reef – Known locally as “Mo” this is the most popular reef in the Florida Keys. Molasses Reef has over 30 different reef sites many of which are world class for snorkeling. What to Expect on a Snorkeling Tour

Snorkeling Tours are generally 4 hours and begin with a 35-50 minute boat ride offshore to the coral reef. Once you arrive on the reef the boat will anchor or moor for 45-60 minutes for snorkeling. During this time snorkelers can get in and out of the water as much as they would like. Swimming is required for safety but really floating is all you need to do. Snorkeling tours will include rental gear (mask, snorkel, fins, snorkel vest). The snorkeling vest will assist with floatation so you can relax and enjoy the view. After 45-60 minutes the boat will move a short distance to the second location for another snorkeling site. Expect to receive basic snorkeling instruction and detailed site briefings from the boat crew.  Snorkeling tours vary in size from 10-40 passengers on group tours. There are many private snorkeling charter options available as well.  Here is additional information on What To Expect Snorkeling in Key Largo.

Snorkeling Tips for First-Timers

When you go snorkeling in Key Largo there are a few things that will help you have the best experience possible. First thing is bring a long sleeve SPF style rash guard for protection from the sun. There is no shade while your snorkeling on the reef. Secondly, move slowly through the water and stay horizontal to ensure you do not damage the reef. Third, be sure to stay hydrated before, during, and after your snorkeling excursion.  Lastly and most important know your limits and slowly build your confidence when your in the middle of the ocean.

Snorkeling with Kids in the Florida Keys

Kids that know how to swim are welcome on all snorkeling tours.  It is important to know that the parent/guardian is responsible for the minors in the water. If you are not a confident swimmer yourself then you may not be able to care for others in the ocean. Consider hiring a snorkeling guide.  The coral reef is 3.5+ miles offshore and effected by weather at all times. Seasickness is always a possibility and this increases when the wind and waves are big. If you have concerns about seasickness, sea conditions, or snorkeling with kids contact us and speak to one of dive professionals.

Can You Snorkel Without a Boat Tour?

Not Really. The coral reef starts about 3.5 miles offshore. You can access water from shore in a couple local places but you will not see many fish, coral, or reef. The best way to snorkel in Key Largo and all of the Florida Keys is by boat. If you do not have your own boat there are daily snorkeling charters to many different snorkeling spots. The best place to snorkel without a boat tour in the Florida Keys Bahia Honda State Park which is about 90 minutes south of Key Largo.

Is Swimming Required?

Yes. Everyone that gets into the water must know how to swim. The water will be deeper than 12 feet at all times. There will not be a time or place at the reef where standing will be an option. Snorkeling on the coral reef is offshore and in the middle of the ocean. If you are not able to swim confidently and float then snorkeling on the reef may not be an option. There is no need to swim far from the boat as it will be on top of the reef. Snorkelers can get on and off the boats as much as they’d like to stay rested and hydrated.
